Emotionally Struggling Teens–How To Make a Difference

Emotionally Struggling Teens—How To Make A Difference

When I heard the news about the suicide of an eighteen year old friend of my young nieces and nephew, it hit me hard. He was a college freshman, had begun to feel depressed while away at school, and now….he’s gone. Irretrievably gone.

This is so heartbreaking. I didn’t know this young man, nor his family. But I am praying for them and sending them light and comfort. My hope is that the closeness and love of family and friends will get them through this tragic and inexpressibly difficult time. I don’t know how they will cope with this loss. I’ve never been through what they are experiencing.

What I have experienced is the fear that my son might harm himself. The thought of that time several years ago can evoke a feeling of dread in my belly even now. It was by far the scariest time I have ever been through in my life. Fearing for my son’s safety, trying everything we knew to do, and still not being able to save him from his own pain was horrifying.

Looking back with the perspective of time and distance, I realize that the gift that my son’s soul gave to him and to us, was the push to act out inappropriately in the extreme. Depression in young people can take a couple of paths that look very different. Some depressed teenagers pull into themselves, and as my husband remarked, are very good at hiding the depth of their pain, they can fake looking good. Others take a different route with the anger that overlays the depression, and behave in offensive, aggressive ways that push people away.

If you notice, both of these paths have the net effect of cutting themselves off from others. And that’s the danger of teenage depression– that the mask is so effective, you just don’t realize the depth of the trouble the young person is in, or the acting out is so extreme, as in my son’s case, that you write it off as characterological in nature, just a kid gone bad.

We have to educate ourselves to recognize the differences in behavior, demeanor, emotional expression, performance in school, changes in relationships, and the changes in ourselves in response to the young person’s distress. You can’t fix, and you sure can’t help what you don’t recognize.

My son’s acting out was extreme enough that it got our attention in an absolutely undeniable way so we were able to make the decision to get him serious and effective treatment. Was that an easy decision? Not at all. To acknowledge the depth of his pain was difficult enough, but to take the steps to getting the right kind of help required us to step out of everything we thought we knew about family and love and healing, and choose to place him where he was going to be safe and was going to be helped.

And he was helped. And he did heal. And so did we heal as a family. Miraculously so.

Sometimes it can feel difficult to face the pain of another, particularly the pain of a young person, who in our eyes has “everything to live for”. Their pain-even our unconscious awareness of it if they are hiding it well—can trigger our own deep feelings of vulnerability and fear; or if they are acting out in angry ways, it can trigger our judgment and our desire to create distance.

We still don’t look at emotional struggles as a process of dysfunction, just the same as the physical processes of dysfunction which we call disease, like cancer, diabetes, or even severe injuries sustained in accidents of one kind or another, But to quote a Website on Teen Depression, “Depression is not just a bad mood or a phase; it is a serious medical condition.”. Most of us have our own deep fears about these kinds of emotional struggles and the mental illness they may point to, and really don’t even know what to do to help.

Consequently these young people who are in emotional pain, many of them Indigo kids (another story, one you can Google), can feel lost, alone, shunned, and just plain unworthy on top of their already wounded emotional state.

One thing that you can do to make a difference is to get comfortable reaching out to people, to young people who seem to be struggling. Even if you’re wrong about their struggle, everyone appreciates acknowledgment and attention. Everyone needs to know that he or she is loved and valued no matter what. Everyone longs to hear that they are a good person.

I have no idea of the story behind this particular young man’s taking of his life. I have no judgment about anyone in his life or what they did or didn’t do. And I don’t even question the plan of his soul because I don’t know what it is–many things remain a mystery. I just know that it breaks my heart.

So if together, we can become informed enough to make a shift in awareness, and make a shift in commitment, and make a shift in our outward behavior in terms of connecting with people in pain, then we can make a real difference. It might even end up being one of those situations where you make a difference but you never actually know that you made a difference. Because a word from you, a smile the right time, affirming of the goodness of a young person, biting your tongue to quiet criticism, a sincere “How are you doing, really?” could possibly change the trajectory of that young life.

And that is something, that on the level of our collective consciousness, would mend a lot of broken hearts and quite possibly save lives.

I’m no expert, I’m just a mom who’s been through a painful, scary time with her kid and would love to see other kids who are suffering get the help they need.

Love,

Jan Masters

PS If you’d like to make a donation to The R.O.C.K. Fund (Recovering Our Cherished Kids) that would be very helpful. I established this fund a couple of years ago to raise awareness around this issue and benefit programs that support emotionally struggling teens/Indigo kids and their families. Every penny you donate goes straight to the kind of program that helped my son and our family. The R.O.C.K. Fund Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the Donate button.

The Real Paradigm Shift Has Already Happened–Inside of You!

It’s true! If you’re waiting for an outer paradigm shift, give it up. You have already shifted inside yourself. You may need help clarifying what exactly you have shifted into, but you HAVE shifted.

Your mind and your heart are aligned with something new. Maybe you know what that is, maybe you don’t…yet. So if your life or your business feel kind of stalled out, or stagnant, or slumping, perhaps it’s that you haven’t yet caught up with your new vibration.

It can help to have another set of eyes and another heart to read the energy of where you are now.
You are so up close to it that it’s possible that you are having a tricky time seeing the broader picture.

I work very intuitively, as my clients know. so helping you to become aware of where you are standing now, where you are positioned now, is something I can offer you.

When you listen for the possibilities around your new alignment, YOU will recognize the ring of truth. You MUST always be your own ultimate  ‘expert’, your own powerful ‘guru’. My job is to hold the lantern and tell you what I perceive and make suggestions about what to do now to reach your goals, to manifest what you desire.

You decide what resonates and then together we figure out what that means in terms of your spiritual business and the evolution of your soul… and the catching up your personality always has to do when your inner being has re-aligned itself with something new.

If you sense that you have made a paradigm shift but lack clarity about it, ask your Inner Guidance, ask your guides and teachers, and hire a coach or mentor whose energy is a match for yours….you know who that is, trust your instincts. It might be me, it might not…but by all means allow yourself to gravitate toward someone whom you a) like,  b) trust, c) who gets outcomes/results for their clients that reflect your own goals.

Be the Source!

Be the Source!

What is it you really want in your life? If you don’t yet have it the very best way to invite it is to Be the Source of it in the life of another, or many others.

When you release the demand for what it is you want to Be, Do, Have and find creative ways to bring it to others, the Universe responds to your vibrational alignment and brings it into your manifested reality much more quickly.

Quantum Physics tells us that everything exists as either wave energy or particle energy. Wave energy is energy that holds something in potential, and particle energy is energy that has manifested into physical reality.

So when you are wanting something–which means it exists as wave energy and hasn’t yet manifested as particle energy into your life yet–if you decide to Be the Source of it for someone, else here’s how that works:

Your intention and your desire for whatever it is that you want is wave energy. When you intend to help someone by Being the Source for them, you send that wave energy in their direction, and that wave energy along with your intention and your actual support of that person, allows them to manifest that energy into particle form. Manifest into what it is that they want.

This means that what they want, with your help, manifests into their lives. Does that make sense?

I have known several people, among them popular coach Robert Evans, who take this business of Being the Source very seriously. This is one of the principles of Robert teaches everyone he coaches. He said it changed his life.

I take this seriously too. There have been several points along the way during my career as a psychotherapist and spiritual coach that people have come to me to heal issues which I myself was in the process of healing. The work that I did with them was so pure and my intention for their healing was so clear, that healing could not help but come to me as well.

And I always knew deep inside that this was Spirit’s way of giving me an opportunity to experience the circular nature of healing. I always knew that it was never about just the client, and it never was about just me– it was about the energetic dance the two of did that resulted in mutual healing. Is there a more beautiful thing than this?

When you take your attention off of yourself and what you want, and put it onto the well-being and healing and happier life experience of another, magical things happen. The truth about us human beings is that we are hardwired to serve one another. That truly is where our deepest joy and greatest satisfaction comes from. The paradoxical nature of this is that when you take your attention off of yourself and your problems and trying to get what you think you lack, and put it on helping someone else to improve and heal his or her life, your life improves almost instantly. Be the Source and see what happens.

So if you have been working on an area of your life where it seems that you really just are not getting what it is you want, trying Being the Source of that very thing for another.

Take a moment right now and think of something you can Be the Source of for someone. And then go do it. I’d love to hear your ‘Be the Source’ stories!!

 More on this soon……

Can I count on your help in this WIN-WIN situation? You’ll LIKE it!

Dear Friends,

My passion is helping spiritual-preneurs who need to re-vitalize their businesses, and supporting seekers on a spiritual path to use their life challenges and crises to evolve spiritually into more Joy and Peace.

My coach, Suzanne Evans created a contest I’m participating in. I must schedule ONE HUNDRED Spiritual Strategy Sessions within ONE WEEK’s time! The sessions are FREE but any love donation you offer will go to a deserving charitable organization.  I also get a chance to win a $5000 ticket to a Mastermind Event, which would be very cool and would jump me forward to help me help lots more people!

You have to MAKE your appointment for the session between now and October 20th. But the session doesn’t need to take place within that week. You can schedule it several weeks out if you like. I have various time slots available.

This is a definite WIN-WIN offering. I will strategize with you around your greatest Business or Life challenge and create an action plan for you to follow right away. Others who have had these session with me have found them to be transformative.

It’s really a no-brainer because I’m using a hassle-free, time-saving, online program that allows you to schedule your session very easily.
